How We Farm

We grow certified organic vegetables and provide pasture-raised, non-GMO protein to our community for four seasons out of the year.

Our growing practices include managed intensive rotational grazing, and zero chemical inputs.

Regenerative Agriculture

When we bought this place in 2012, its rolling 80 acres had been fallow for many decades.

Today, we’re turning it back into a working farm in a way that continues to protect the land.

Why We Farm

We sell our food at grocery stores and farmers markets, but that’s not our main thing.

Our main thing is vegetable and protein subscriptions. Some people call them CSA shares. The good health and happiness of our members is at the heart of every choice we make and everything we do.

We are proud to offer our members plentiful, varied diets straight through the gorgeous summers and long winters of our part of the beautiful North.

SOIL HEALTH

VEGETABLE HEALTH

PUBLIC HEALTH

Our animals graze the fields, producing meat, eggs, and manure. Composted manure and balanced minerals fertilize the soil, which grows the vegetables, which in turn feed the people and animals—not to mention the beneficial insects, fungi, and bacteria so critical for soil health.

We rely as little as possible on external inputs, and use zero synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, preferring instead to cycle nutrients through the ecosystem of our farm.

This allows us to use fewer fossil fuels in transport, and also helps us to keep costs down.

Why are we called Bluestem Farm?

There is a native Midwestern grass we love called Little Bluestem.

Its roots reach incredibly deep.
